Despite its small territory, Vietnam has a great location with a 3,260–km sea route from North to South. Many bays, seas and islands of Vietnam were acknowledged by well-known tourist magazines. For example, Ha Long Bay was voted in second place of top ten attractive destinations all over the world in a survey by the Lonely Planet (2014), Lang Co Bay one of the most beautiful bays in the world by the World-Bays Club (2009,) or My Khe Beach one of the six most attractive beaches on the planet by the Forbes.
However, the place introduced in this article – Ky Co Island – would sound unfamiliar not only to foreign visitors, but also to many Vietnamese, if you are not the type of wanderism people.
Where is Ky Co Island?
Ky Co island is located in Nhon Ly Island Commune, Quy Nhon City, Binh Dinh, a province in the South Central Coast of Vietnam. Quy Nhon is a port city which is 1,070 km from Hanoi towards the south and 652 km from Ho Chi Minh City towards the north. Although being far from the two largest cities of Vietnam, Quy Nhon can be easily reached by a train, a long-haul passenger car or an airplane.
Ky Co island is about 25 km from Quy Nhon City center. Those who have come to Ky Co island are inevitably impressed and amazed by the beautiful landscape here. Many newspapers favoured and praised Ky Co island as the Maldives in Vietnam because of its clear water transparent to the bottom, smooth white sand and beautiful coral reefs.
What’s Special About Ky Co Island?
Binh Dinh Province does not focus on tourism development. Many places in this province have not developed tourism, so they are still intact. Ky Co is one of those places. The island still retains its original pristine wilderness. In addition to the white sand and the yellow sunshine, Ky Co island is also known for its small caves, and lush mountains facing the sea. More interestingly, you can see the mountain rocks, for some reason, surrounding each other to construct saltwater areas like mini swimming pools. In those natural pools, if you look closely, you can see shrimps and fish stuck inside.
Ky Co Island has no inhabitant. Therefore, no fresh water supply service can be found. However, the nature gives the island folded layers of mountains; as a result, rain falling will help retain cool fresh water.
When traveling to Ky Co, you can visit the nearby Bai Dua (lit. Pineapple Beach) to see colorful coral reefs. Because of the blue water, you only need a swimming goggle and a lifebuoy to look through the sea water and observe the coral reefs beneath.
It would be a shortcoming to visit a new land without trying its specialty. Coming to Ky Co, you definitely have to enjoy the fresh seafood flavored and skillfully perfumed by the hands of the indigenous, bringing the flavor of Ky Co that nowhere else has such as grilled snails, grilled abalone, crabs, steamed squid, grilled brioch grease, and fried spinach with lime and fresh “bun” (white rice noodles.) The cost for each person including going to the island and eating seafood is about 280,000-300,000 VND.
When and How to Visit Ky Co Island?
The best time to visit the island is from February to August with a lot of sunshine. From Quy Nhon City, you can go over Thi Nai Bridge to Phuong Mai Peninsula. Then, drive along Highway 19 B, turn to Nhon Ly island Commune, and go through FLC resort to Nhon Ly island commune. Because there are a few tourism operations, you can only take a basket boat, boat or canoe by local people to reach Ky Co island. It takes about 40 minutes by canoe and a bit longer by the others. The local people there are experienced fishermen, friendly and hospitable. Self-prepared travel services are well-prepared and affordable.
While the Maldives tourism costs you a fortune, to travel to Ky Co Island, each individual spends only 3,000,000-4,000,000 VND for a short trip from three to four days.
